چکیده

This study explores the capabilities of methods for in-situ synthesis of titanium aluminides using the Direct Metal Deposition process. This allows for the functional grading of components which will be required for next generation aerospace components. The feasibility of three techniques are explored here; firstly, a new process of powder preparation for Additive Manufacturing, satelliting, in which a larger parent powder is coated with a smaller powder fraction. Here, Al parent particles are satellited with fine TiO2 to produce an intermetallic matrix composite with Al2O3 particulates. The satelliting procedure is shown to increase capability and mixing of in situ synthesis. Secondly, combined wire and single powder feeding is explored through the use of Ti wire and Al powder to create Ti-50Al (at%). Finally, a combination of wire and loose mixed powders is explored to produce the commercially deployed Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb (at%) alloy. The simultaneous wire and powder delivery is designed to overcome issues encountered when processing with single powder or wire feedstocks, whilst allowing for on-the-fly changes in elemental composition required for functional grading. Characterisation of the deposits produced, through OM, SEM, and EDX, reveal the influence of key processing parameters and provides a meaningful basis for comparison between the techniques. Results show that it is possible to produce 2 + two-phase microstructures consistent with previous studies which have relied upon more expensive and harder to obtain pre-alloyed feedstocks. This represents a move forward in manufacturability for an emergent

TITANIUM ALUMINIDES SYNTHESIS BY ALUMINO-CALCIOTHERMIC REDUCTION OF TiO2

Abstract: Production of titanium aluminides in TiO2-Al-Ca system has been investigated. For this purpose, different compositions of raw materials were studied in a special reaction vessel. In a special case, the non-completed reaction of TiO2 with Al and Ca resulted in the production of granulates of titanium aluminides especially Ti3Al and other Ti – Al phases as the metallic product and C...

اثر زمان آسیاب‌کاری بر تولید نانوکامپوزیت زمینه سرامیکی TixAly/Al2O3 به روش مکانوشیمیایی

In recent years, much research has been performed in the field of nanomaterials synthesis using mechanochemical process. In this research, TixAly/Al2O3 ceramic matrix nanocomposite was produced by the mechanochemical method. Aluminum and inexpensive titanium oxide powders were used as raw materials, and milling was performed under N2 atmosphere. The results showed that reduction of TiO2 by Al i...

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF COMBUSTION SYNTHESIS OF ALUMINIDE INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS

Combustion synthesis is a special thermophysico-chemical process applied for production of intermetallic compounds. In the present work, a reaction–diffusion numerical model was developed to analyze the combustion synthesis of aluminide intermetallics by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis process. In order to verify the reliability of the numerical model, an experimental setup was desi...

Religion and Spirituality: Adam Smith versus J-J Rousseau

Adam Smith and J-J Rousseau share some common ground when it comes to religion, namely that they were born into  and educated in cultural contexts deeply shaped by Reformed Christianity. However, close consideration of their writings on religion reveal marked difference. This paper explores those differences and finds that Rousseau and Smith are radically at odds on this score. Smith has almost...

The Effect of Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al/Al3Zr + Al3Ti In-situ Hybrid Composite Fabricated by Friction Stir Processing

In this research, an in-situ hybrid composite reinforced by Al3Zr and Al3Ti aluminide particles was fabricated by friction stir processing (FSP). The base metal was in the form of a rolled Al 3003-H14 alloy sheet, and zirconium and titanium metal powders were used as the reinforcements. Six passes of FSP were applied. Tensile strength and hardness of the base metal, as well as FSPed samples bef...
